Working with sustainability is not a easy “quick fix”, it takes time and requires endurance, there is much to be changed, not at least our own approach. When we started our education in ecotourism it was obvious that we had very little knowledge. It's not just about sorting of waste or travel with train instead of flying, it's so much more.
It has been an amazing journey for us, we have meet many talented lecturers and dedicated entrepreneurs, that now run their own companies around the country. Some of them have guided tours, some of them run B&B and some of them followed their own dreams and move to a family farm to running their own business.
For us, sustainability primarily means the FOLLOWING:
Collaborate locally.
Work with small groups.
Give priority to local suppliers who provide organic local produce.
Buy equipment as far as possible second hand.
Use degradable cutlery, plates and mugs.
The next stage of our journey is to join West Sweden's major initiative " Sustainability stride " for a sustainable tourism. They are working with four basic principles:
Low unnecessary environmental impact as possible.
Good for both residents and visitors.
More visitors when it is not full.
More full-time jobs and more robust businesses.
This gives us the opportunity to learn more and learn from others' experiences, so we can contribute to minimize unnecessary environmental impact in the future.
